Our recommended mountain retreat ‘Hotel La Pineta’, located on the outskirts of Cerro Verronese in the heart of Lessinia, and home of Italian cycling hero Damiano Cunego. The focus of this looped self-guided GPS route (as downloadable TCX/GPX files) is to experience the raw nature of the mountains of Lessinia. The area is cycling mecca for cyclists from all around il Veneto. There are several Gran Fondo that share these awesome roads, which provide a stunning view over the plains of the Veneto and Verona at times, and the pre-Dolomiti to the north. The Tour of the Alps (ex-giro di Trentino) also passes through here often, because of the challenging terrain.
There is no escaping it, this ride involves epic amounts of climbing and is recommended for very experienced cyclists only. After an initial warm-up the route takes you over the Alpine-esque scenery of the pre-Dolomiti Lessini and onto the valley floor below, thankfully down to Sdruzzina an incredible descent (and initially very steep, so be very careful). The climb to Monte Baldo is long and very exposed, although not the most difficult way up, 21km, 7% average, max 12% and 1500m ascending. The views continue all the way to the recommended stop where you can perch high above Lake Garda, eating great Trentino strudel and of course excellent cappucino. The descent is long and broken so make sure to take extra layers as weathe can be ather unsettled (check forecast first). The final part of the route takes you up the local Time-Trial climb Peri-Fosse (9km, 800m elevation gain. 8.9% average, 15% max) to enjoy the last roads leading back for one of the most decadent ice-cream Sundaes on offer at Araldo just across the road from La Pineta, go on, you deserved it!
