The self-guided GPS route (and downloadable TCX/GPX files) from Cerro Veronese is an ideal itinerary for experiencing Lessinia on two wheels. This tranquill location is an ideal spot for some of the most varied terrain in Italy, flat, rolling, hilly, short and long ascents are all your doorstep. The roads and climbs around Verona and Lessinia feature numerous times in the Giro, and common ground for many GranFondos in the area.
You will ride through the extremely picturesque and historical (UNESCO site) city of Verona, passing along the Adige river briefly soaking up some of the main sights; Ponte Pietra, teatro Romano, Duomo, Santuario Madonna di Lourdes, CastelVecchio and il Lungadige where many a Giro d’Italia has been fought. From there you head to Torre del Benaco on the serene Lago di Garda, after weaving you way past the Valpolicellan (Valley of cellars) foot hills. At Torre you may visit the colonial harbour for a quick caffe, Italian style before emabarking on your final effort before our recommended lunch stop with some of the best views over Lake Garda at San Zeno di Montagna (579m). After refuelling the route takes you down into the Vald’Adige for the local time-trial ascent of Peri-Fosse (9km, 800m elevation gain. 8.9% average, 15% max). For those that have earnt it, another option for refuelling is at the top of this challenging climb, before the final stretch back to La Pineta. Quite an epic day out!
